Bent Street Boat Ramp Channel to Go Ahead

As a result of four years of lobbying and consultation the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) has given conditional approval for the City to fund and construct a $180,000 dredged channel in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park adjacent to the Bent Street Boat ramp.

The City’s proposal has been considered in depth by both the DEC and the Marine Parks and Reserves Authority (MPRA) and will offer boat users better access to the Bent Street boat ramp. The preferred location of the channel was based on coastal movements and sand accretion.

In formulating the proposal the City consulted with local users of the area as well as the Marine Infrastructure Advisory Committee (MIAC) and Windsurfing WA. The location of the channel takes into account different users of the area with the biggest focus on the safety of all users.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels said the DEC’s decision to endorse the proposal will help to improve the safety of the users of the area: “There are a number of environmental conditions associated with the DEC’s approval that will ensure the construction is sensitive to both the seagrass and marine fauna.

“Works are expected to take about four months and will commence in late autumn 2013, following the  dolphin calving period.”

“The City will engage a fauna specialist to monitor marine fauna presence during construction; which will be discontinued if sea lions, little penguins or dolphins come within 100 metres of the dredging area.

“In the longer term the channel will help to prevent propeller damage of the seagrass surrounding the boat ramp.

“The City is looking forward to moving ahead on this project and working together with the MPRA and DEC to provide a much needed boat access channel to Bent St boat ramp.

Dolphin calving period Construction is set to begin next April and May, with completion expected in mid-winter.
